What we do

Excavation services

Building, fixing drainage or clearing a lot? We look at the site, locate utilities and plan the dig before any machine moves.

The Waco Excavating Company does excavation, grading, trenching, land clearing and drainage work for homes, farms and businesses in Waco and the towns around it. We work on Waco's two very different kinds of ground: the heavy clay that covers most of the city and the prairie, and the chalk hills to the west around Woodway.

Waco clay is hard on anything built on it. It shrinks and cracks in summer, swells when the rains return, and drains so slowly that flat yards hold water. That shapes how we grade, how we bed pipe and how we prepare pads. Out in the county, acreage brings its own work: septic systems, culverts, gravel drives and brush.

Most jobs start with a call about water in the yard, a sewer line that needs replacing, a pad for a shop or a new home, or land to clear. We look at the site, the soil and the drainage, request the Texas811 locate, and put the scope and the price in a written quote.

Frequently asked questions

What does excavation cost in Waco?

HomeGuide's 2026 national figures run $2.50 to $15.00 per cubic yard, and $1,100 to $5,600 for a typical project. They are national ranges, not our prices. Wet clay, chalk rock and travel to rural sites move Waco jobs most, so we quote after seeing the ground.

Do I have to call 811 before I dig?

Yes. Give Texas811 two working days or more, but not over 14 days. We file the ticket before every job.

Who permits septic systems around Waco?

The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District permits septic systems across McLennan County, including in Waco and the other cities.

Why does my yard hold water?

Waco's black clay drains very slowly, and flat yards with no outlet hold water for days. Regrading, swales and drains fix most of them.

Do you build pads for shops and barns?

Yes. We clear, grade and compact pads for shops, garages, sheds and pole barns, and build gravel drives to reach them.

Can you dig when the ground is wet?

Sometimes, but grading and compaction wait until the clay dries. Rain days get built into the schedule.

How much does excavation cost in Waco?

It depends on the size of the dig, soil and rock conditions, access for equipment and how much material has to be hauled away. We visit the site and give you a written quote.

Do you locate utilities before digging?

Yes. We have underground utilities marked before any excavation starts.

Do I need a permit for excavation or grading in Waco?

Grading, trenching in the right-of-way and demolition often need permits. We check what applies to your site.

Do you haul away the dirt?

Yes. Haul-off of soil, rock and debris is included in the quote when it is needed.

Do you work for homeowners or only builders?

Both. We do small residential jobs as well as site work for builders and businesses.
